I’ve recommended a couple of free, trustworthy apps to clean and speed up your Mac called GrandPerspective (above) and OnyX. If your computer started out fast but has become slow over time, it’s quite likely that your hard drive is overloaded with files.

It’s easy to have a general understanding of what is and isn’t working well with your Mac: everyone knows how to explain that “the screen is fine” but “the computer is slow.” If you really want to understand why the screen is fine, and how the computer could be faster, I’ve decoded Apple’s Tech Specs pages for you ( part 1 and part 2) to explain the Mac family’s features in plain English. There’s a lot inside, so you may want to bookmark this piece for future reference!… And you can also get free apps to improve your Mac’s storage and responsiveness, find plain English explanations of your Mac’s technical specs, and learn about the little security screws Apple uses to tamper-proof its machines. This guide walks you through everything: in one place, you can learn about the best Mac hard drives, RAM upgrades, docks, keyboards, trackpads, stands, bags, and travel accessories out there.
Today, I’m tying them all together in this handy, one-stop roundup of the best Mac accessories and upgrades. The battery is considered a non-removable part of the top case, which also includes the keyboard and trackpad, so when you get a battery replacement from Apple for this model, they change all of that at the same time, as one piece.Over the past six months, I’ve published quite a few tutorials to help Mac users improve the performance of older computers, as well as some great guides to the best Mac accessories across a variety of categories.
If you get Apple to do it, it's expensive, but that's partially because they don't just change the battery. In contrast, for the 2015 MacBook Pro, it's glued in, so the battery replacement is horrendously painful to do, and you run the risk of damaging the keyboard or trackpad. It will be expensive, but not that expensive.
Or you can pay Apple for an OEM battery replacement. And even if it does crap out after say a year, you can simply change it again in 5 minutes. If you do decide to go third party, you can change the battery in 5 minutes. OEM, because they're simply false, if battery life after a full charge is any indication.įor the 2015 MacBook Air, just be happy the battery replacement is so easy. And don't believe any of the claims stating that the batteries have increased capacity vs. Sometimes you get a half-decent one, but with half-decent meaning it doesn't crap out in 3 months. In my experience, third party batteries for Macs just simply suck. In any case, I echo the sentiment in here. We already know that Apple has some of the best battery performance and life in the industry, but I suspect it's not just due to the quality of the battery, but is also because Apple uses specialized charging algorithms to maintain battery health and lifespan, which wouldn't be utilized to the same extent with third party batteries. In that context, I have the sneaking suspicion that not only are most third party batteries poorly made, they also lack the battery identification and/or proprietary circuitry that Macs will look for, for optimal performance.

However, if you're running a Mac laptop that is still being actively updated, you may run into battery life issues or OS update issues. If you're using something like a Mac mini where power management is less important, and that computer is no longer getting major OS updates anyway, then stick a third party NVMe drive in there and be happy. Furthermore, some major OS updates look for the OEM drives to perform a firmware update, but if you don't have the OEM drive, the OS update simply fails. Power management features are not activated, and recovery mode doesn't work. Or do they? Yes they work, but the Macs don't recognize the hardware as OEM and therefore treats them differently. All you need is a $5 adapter that rearranges the pins. In several Macs that use M.2 SSDs, you can actually use third party NVMe SSDs in them. This is not related, but I think it could be illustrative.
